Earlier this month, bakers gathered in London’s Hyde Park to participate in a swiftly growing international trend: cake picnics.

The gathering attracted 463 cakes, and at least one Great British Bake Off contestant. Martha Collison posted a variety of photos from the event on her Instagram account.

Martha, who was the youngest baker in her group when she competed in Season 5, and who has since published several cookbooks, brought two of her own cakes.

The London cake picnic came three months after the 2025For kick off to cake picnics in San Francisco. That edition, the third held in the city by the bay, attracted 1,387 cakes — and generated some discontent.

Before I tell you more about the kerfuffle, let me explain how cake picnics came to be.
