I achieved an ambition on Sunday. My family has always kicked off the New Year by eating Hoppin’ John, the dish made from black-eyed peas.

Legend has it that the three elements of Hoppin John are essential to success in the coming year: black-eyed peas represent coins. collard greens represent greenbacks (dollars), or cash. corn bread represents gold.
