I paid my first visit to Japan in 1991, but it was not until 2002 that I got a real sense of what it was like to live there. I was honored to receive a media fellowship from the Japan Society of New York. Four of us - Kara Swisher, Jim Sciutto, David Plotz and myself - got the opportunity to map out study plans and set up a travel itinerary.
My research led to my book, The End of Detroit: How The Big Three Lost Their Grip On The American Car Market, published in 2003. It’s still in print, for which I am grateful. Another outcome from the trip was my love for the Japanese hot water pot.
