Why there are still strawberries at some farmers markets
The strawberry season in Michigan goes by in the blink of an eye. It only lasts for a random three weeks between Memorial and Fourth of July. When network television showed people eating strawberries and cream at Wimbledon, I could only look on with envy.
In August, I was surprised to find strawberries at a farmers market in Toronto. I snapped up a basket and figured that perhaps the season ran later north of us.
This past weekend, I found strawberries at a small farmers market in Amherstburg, Ontario, south of Windsor. It seemed impossible that there could ne strawberries this late. Were they hothouse? I asked. Or hydroponic?
