The contrast between the Canadian and British baking competitions could not have been clearer this weekend.
The latest episode of the Great British Bake Off, called Dessert Week, was a metaphor for the entire season. Nothing has been all that memorable, and this one was truly a car crash.
Things got off to a weak start with the signature challenge, Creme Caramel. Three came out okay; three were subpar. Then came the technical treacle pudding challenge, a literal mess for every single baker. Cup after cup disintegrated.
Paul spoke for pretty much everyone watching when he declared, “That is disgusting.” He and Prue looked horrified at the blobs of ramekins and rivers of syrup behind the bakers’ photos. They both said it was the worst thing they had ever judged.
