I just had an egg cream at Russ & Daughters in NYC. Not sure what chocolate syrup they used, but it was delicious . But I’m with Ms Streisand in wondering why this egg-less beverage is called the egg cream.
I’m dying to go to Russ & Daughters. In all my visits, I’ve never been. The name comes from the foam that’s created when the milk and soda water are combined. It looks like frothed egg whites.

We went to Russ & Daughters’ new(ish) location in Hudson Yards. It’s nice to have a location that’s closer to midtown (though it’s very far west).
